The Case of the Mysterious Flickering Light

Detective Lily loved her reading lamp. Every night, it glowed bright and warm on her desk. But one evening—click—nothing happened. The light wouldn't turn on!

"A mystery!" Lily grabbed her magnifying glass. "I'll solve this case!"

The Investigation Begins

Lily stared at the lamp. It had so many parts:

The lightbulb at the top
A fancy wireless switch that beeped when you pressed it
A long cord that snaked across the floor
A mysterious box on the cord (she never really looked at it)
The plug in the wall

"The wireless switch!" she declared. "That's the newest part. New things break first!"

She pressed the button. Beep! Nothing. She pressed it again. Beep beep! Still nothing.

She unplugged the wireless switch, turned it over in her hands, then plugged it back in.

Beep!

Still dark.

The Lightbulb Suspect

"Wait," Lily said. "What if it's the lightbulb? Lightbulbs burn out ALL THE TIME!"

She carefully unscrewed the bulb. It looked fine. No black marks. But she got a brand new bulb from the closet anyway.

Twist, twist, twist.

She pressed the wireless switch. Beep!

Darkness.

"WHAT?" Lily flopped in her chair. "I checked EVERYTHING!"

Getting Desperate

Lily tried everything she could think of:

She unplugged the wireless switch again and plugged it back in THREE more times
She tried the old lightbulb again
She tried the new lightbulb again
She checked if the outlet worked (yes—her tablet charger worked fine)
She wiggled the cord
She stared at the lamp very seriously

Nothing worked.

The Obvious Clue

"Maybe I should trace the WHOLE path," Lily sighed, getting on her hands and knees.

"Okay: plug in the wall... check. Then the cord goes to... wait, what's this box thing?"

There, halfway down the cord where it disappeared behind her desk, was a small switch. The kind you slide with your thumb.

It was set to OFF.

"You have GOT to be kidding me."

Slide.

GLOW! The lamp blazed to life.

The Lesson

Lily sat at her desk, lamp shining brightly, and wrote in her detective notebook:

CASE CLOSED

When something doesn't work, start at the BEGINNING and check EVERY step in order—even the boring parts you never think about.

That little switch on the cord? I'm putting tape over it so I never bump it again.
