The Case of the Mysterious Flickering Light

A children's detective story about tracing problems back to their source instead of jumping to conclusions.

Detective Lily loved her reading lamp. But one evening—click—nothing!

"A mystery!" Lily grabbed her magnifying glass.

The Investigation

The lamp had a bulb, a fancy wireless switch that beeped, a cord, a mysterious box on the cord, and a plug.

"The wireless switch!" she declared. "New things break first!"

Beep! Nothing. She unplugged it, plugged it back in. Still dark.

"What if it's the bulb? Lightbulbs burn out ALL THE TIME!"

She got a brand new one. Twist, twist. Beep! Darkness.

"WHAT?" Lily flopped in her chair.

The Obvious Clue

"Maybe I should trace the WHOLE path," she sighed, getting on her knees.

"Plug in the wall... check. Then the cord goes to... wait, what's this box thing?"

There, halfway down the cord, was a small switch. Set to OFF.

"You have GOT to be kidding me."

Slide. GLOW! The lamp blazed to life.

CASE CLOSED. When something doesn't work, start at the BEGINNING and check EVERY step in order—even the boring parts you never think about.

THE END

P.S. The wireless switch was never broken. Neither was the lightbulb. Lily owes them both an apology.
