The Cock and the Pearl

A musical retelling of Aesop's fable about knowing what truly matters to you

Scratch, scratch, scratch in the morning light, Rooster pecking left and right. Digging through the dusty ground, Look at what this rooster found!

A pearl! A pearl! So shiny and round, The finest jewel that could be found. But Rooster tilted his feathered head, And here is what old Rooster said:

"You're very fine, I must confess, A gem of beauty, nothing less. A jeweler would shout hooray, But I can't eat you any day!"

"Give me one little grain of corn, A barley seed on a sunny morn, Over all the pearls on earth, Corn's what has the greater worth!"

He scratched it aside without a care, Left that pearl just lying there. Went on pecking through the hay, Found his breakfast right away.

What's a treasure? Who's to say? It all depends upon your day. What you need is what has worth, Not the rarest gem on earth.
