The Peacock and Juno
A musical retelling of Aesop's fable about a peacock who wanted what another bird had
Peacock spread his feathers wide, Colors gleaming, full of pride. Blue and green and gold like flame, Surely every bird's the same?
But when he opened up his beak, The sound that came out made him shriek! A scratchy, screechy, awful cry, Not like Nightingale's sweet lullaby.
So Peacock flew to Juno's throne, To air a very jealous moan. "Oh Juno, Queen, it isn't fair! The nightingale sings sweet as air, While I, with all my beauty grand, Have the worst voice in the land!"
Juno smiled and shook her head, "The nightingale was given song, The eagle's wings are broad and strong, And you, dear Peacock, you were blessed With the most beautiful of dress."
"Each one has a gift to share, No creature gets them all, that's fair."
Peacock spread his tail across the ground — A thousand eyes flashing blue and green. And somewhere in the dark, The nightingale began to sing.
